Greek 'Ban' on Selling Property in the Turkish Cyprus
The Greek-Cypriot Administration has
put a former law from 1970 into practice and banned the selling of
'Greek property' to Turkish people to prevent Greek goods from
being sold in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
According to the news in Greek press, the law known as 1970/49
gives the Interior Ministry authority to ban the transformation of
sales of property "in case the person who purchased the property
is persuaded that he/she has the probability to use the purchased
goods to affect the public security."
The Greek Interior Ministry is investigating a Greek's demand to
transfer the rights to five square meters land in Girne (Kyrenia)
he owned before 1974 to an English company in the context of the
1970 immovables law.
Greek Land Office Manager Andreas Hristodulu has commented on
transferring formerly Greek property in TRNC to a non-Greek
saying, "The position that will give confirmation in the basement
of 1970/40 numbered law on state security is Interior Ministry."
Hristodulu has said that the former Greek properties in the North
are allowed to be sold only to Greeks. However, the Greek press
has stated that the law is opposed to the constitution and the
European Human Rights Convention.
Dr. Yesim Sahiner says "this is a part of ethnic cleansing against
the Turkish Cypriots. The Greek administration tries to clean all
Turkish traces on the island and tries to maintain the island
Greek forever." |
